The Main Street Block Party will be held at Continental Club, The Mink, Big Top, Natachees Supper and Punch. They are all located at the corner of Main and Alabama. The party starts at 1pm. There will be a ton of bands and some DJ’s at each spot. Lone Star and Pabst Blue Ribbon will be there with the beer.

Here it is, folks, our first installment of what bands/musicians/rappers were most popular on Do713. How did we come to this conclusion? We looked at who had the most followers, the most votes and the most events. Six of the musicians listed below were in at least two of those categories. But only one musician was in all three. Via Colori isn’t your typical fundraiser. For six years, the Center for Hearing and Speech, benefits greatly from our pure entertainment. This weekend, Via Colori is expected to raise more than $325,000 for children with hearing impairments.

Bring the family to Sam Houston Park in Downtown and experience sidewalk-chalk art like you’ve never imagined. Street artists from all over the country will inspire you with their lively multi-dimensional (albeit temporary) pieces.

There will also be plenty of activities for the kiddos and young-at-heart.

Congratulations to Market Square Park on receiving the 2011 Downtown Pinnacle Award

Recently Downtown Houston’s Market Square Park beat out 10 other public city spaces to receive the coveted award that recognizes marked improvements on urban design, functionality, or enhancing the downtown economy. With a dog park, Niko Niko’s restaurant and a plaza for live music and movie screenings, I’d say Market Square Park hits all three categories right between the eyes.

Washington D.C. based International Downtown Association awarded Market Square Park this prize. IDA President and CEO, David Downey had this to say about Houston’s newest beloved park:

“Market Square Park is a wonderful example for all downtowns to emulate.”

If you haven’t been to Market Square Park, now’s your chance! Bring a blanket or some lawn chairs and enjoy a free screening of National Lampoon’s Animal House presented by Alamo Drafthouse. Charity Event: Canned Acoustica #4 at Warehouse Live is Here!

Feel like simultaneously helping your community while listening to some of Houston’s best local musicians in a unique setting? Look no further than EaDo’s (that’s East of Downtown) premier venue, Warehouse Live for Canned Acoustica Numero Quatro. All proceeds from each Canned Acoustica session benefit a local charity. Friday’s show will benefit Harvey Middle School, which is in desperate need of school supplies.

What makes this so different from any other charity event? Well, for one thing, you don’t have to get all fancy, nor do you have to fork over a ton of money to feel good about helping the community. Alls you have to do is bring 3 items from the list below to gain access to 8 bands playing for your enjoyment, all night long. Oh yeah, in case the title didn’t tip you off, the show will be all acoustic. Check out the Facebook event page. Friday 8/26, at Warehouse Live, 7 p.m.

5th Annual White Linen Night in Houston’s Heights adds Pink Street

This Saturday evening, many businesses in Houston’s historic Heights will open their doors to participate in the 5th annual White Linen Night. Drawing more than 40,000 revelers, this free event creates a Texas-sized sense of community that includes, art, live music, fashion shows and so much more. Maps of the event can be downloaded or will be available throughout the event.

New to this year’s event is a focus on raising awareness for Breast Cancer. Pink Street will be a section of White Oak Dr., that will host several organizations passionate about education & finding a cure for this disease. Along Pink Street, event goers will drink pink lemonade and have a chance to win raffles, play fun games (Bra Pong ping pong?!), receive goodies and much more!

Many of Houston’s finest Food Trucks will be stationed throughout the event – remember to bring cash! These aren’t the trucks in front of construction sites; think gelato, Korean BBQ, and gourmet foods/artisan breads.

Fitzgerald’s will host three events, celebrating Houston’s thriving arts scene. Fresh Arts at Fitz will feature performances from Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, Stages Repertory Theater, & Talento Bilingüe de Houston as well as live music into the night.

If you live in the Heights or within a reasonable biking distance, it is highly recommended you safely bike, walk or find another form of transport. Parking in the heights will be a nightmare (coming from past personal experience). However, if these aren’t viable options, no fear – complimentary parking & shuttle service will be provided.

Scrabble and the City – benefiting Literacy Advance of Houston

Forget Words with Friends and try your skills face to face in what will be one of Houston’s more fun and creative ways to raise money for a great cause. Scrabble and the City will be held on Thursday at the St. Arnold Brewery. With entry, participants will enjoy dining, dancing, drinks and, of course Scrabble. The fun part? How about bribery, rule bending, costumes & great prizes? Not too shabby, eh? Either enter as a team or as a spectator.
